Recipient of the Professor Marie Bashir Citizenship Award - Obadiah Williams

Obadiah and Richard Quinn

HHHS wishes to extend our congratulations to Obadiah Williams who achieved the school's most prestigious award at Presentation Day, the Professor Marie Bashir Citizenship Award.

The citation detailing the reasons Obadiah achieved this award is included below. As you can read, he is a most deserving recipient of this award.

Obadiah was presented the award by Mayor of Hunters Hill, Counsellor Richard Quinn.

Obadiah Williamshas attended Hunters Hill High School for the past six years and was a candidate for the 2014 Higher School Certificate in the following courses: English (Advanced), Mathematics, Biology, PDHPE and Industrial Technology (Timber).

Obadiah is a highly organised, self-motivated and outstanding young man who has been fully engaged with the life of the school throughout his six years at Hunters Hill High School.

Obadiah has impressed his teachers with his exceptional intelligence, diligence and perseverance.  He has consistently displayed an outstanding work ethic, leadership and positive behaviour. Obadiah has had an outstanding academic record throughout his secondary education, consistently ranked within the top five of his grade. Most notably, his HSC Assessment record achievements include 1st in PDHPE and Industrial Technology (Timber), 2nd in Biology and 3rd in English (Advanced). Obadiah's Major Work for Industrial Technology – a wooden bath – was a highlight. In all his endeavours, Obadiah has exhibited an enthusiastic, focused and mature approach; thereby, enabling the successful realisation of his goals, as well as helping his peers achieve theirs.

Evidence of Obadiah's commitment to the wider school curriculum and community has also been impressive. He has performed meritoriously in the following roles: school captain, school representative, athlete, mentor, leader and public speaker.

  • His role as 2014 School Captain included many responsibilities such as attending meetings, seminars, leadership courses, writing for the local papers and meeting notable people including Michele Bruniges, Secretary of Education and Communities
  • As School Captain, Obadiah showed initiative in coordinating the organisation of a Blood Bank run for the Red Cross, where up to 30 students and teachers donated blood for a worthy cause
  • Participant in the Student Representative Council in 2014 and coordinator of numerous fundraiser barbecues and other whole school events
  • In sport, Obadiah was a player and team captain of Rugby League and Union and AFL; played representative sport in knock-outs, gala days, zone and regional carnivals
  • A Peer Support Leader to Year 7 in 2013 and mentor of the "Eat Your Words" Literacy program in 2012 and 2013
  • A Public speaker on numerous occasions including Open Day 2014 and our primary enrichment programs like Top of the Hill 2012 and 2013 and the parent forum ‘Stepping Stones' in 2013

Unsurprisingly, Obadiah was chosen for the Annual Achievers' Camp from Year 9 onwards - a selection that recognises the ‘thinkers' ‘triers' and ‘doers' within the school community. Furthermore, he was honoured with annual Citizenship Award on five occasions. His consistent high achievement has also seen him invited to the last four Achievers Morning Teas. He has also attended the annual Ski Trip in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

In January 2012, Obadiah was involved in a conservation and humanitarian project in Thailand. Throughout this month long project, Obadiah assisted in the building of a new school for orphaned children, helped teach English and aided in the caring for rescued elephants.

Obadiah has demonstrated passion and excellence in all aspects of school life and has enjoyed great success as a result of his commitment and diligence with his mature, polite, co-operative manner.  He has impressed his teachers, establishing excellent relationships with both staff and students within the Hunters Hill High School community.

A credit to his school and family, Obadiah would enrich any organisation, company, university or workplace. His awareness of social issues, empathy towards people from all walks of life and overall ambitious drive to be the best will enable Obadiah success in all areas of life. Obadiah is an exceptional young man of the highest calibre.

We congratulate him on being a worthy recipient of the prestigious Professor Marie Bashir Citizenship Award.
