Principals Report

It has been an exciting and energising few weeks as staff and students make a promising start to the school year and we prepare for our Open Day - to which you are all invited, so spread the word! A special welcome to those who are new to our school community: our Year 7 students; new students throughout the school and their families; new teachers to Hunters Hill High and to all returning students and teachers. I am confident that this year, as in previous years, we can all enjoy our year at Hunters Hill High School; a school community that has strong values and partnerships with its parents, high expectations of its students and staff and impressive academic, sporting and cultural achievements.

Our Learning and Support Team composed of our Year Advisors, School Counsellor, Ms Elizabeth Shelley, Girls Supervisor, Ms Julia Riviera, International Students Coordinator, Ruth Simpson, Learning and Support Teachers, Ms Jess Austin and Ms Jess de Santis (International Students) meets weekly and work together to complement teachers' work in classrooms. Your child's Year Advisor is the best contact, if you have questions or concerns of a welfare nature; our counsellor, who works closely with our year advisors and deputies, is the best contact if the matter is more serious. Please be mindful that whilst teachers will endeavour to respond within 24-48 hours, a teacher's day is a very full one with classes, playground duty as well as planning, preparation, professional learning, various meetings with students and staff during, before and after students' school day.

Whilst the Year 11 Information Evening was held on Thursday, February 12, the school will host an Information Evening for Year 7 Parents on Tuesday, February 24. Year 7 parents, please note that you will receive a separate letter about this evening. The Information Evening will follow a P&C function to which all parents are invited (see the P&C President's piece in this newsletter).

My congratulations to Year 12 students, 2014! I am so very proud of their outstanding HSC achievements (see Faculty reports) as well as the wonderful legacy that they have left for current and future students. Led by strong and inspirational leaders: Relieving Deputy Principal, Mr Josh Gane, Year Advisor, Ms Iva Slavica and School Captains: Jane Andrews, Obi Williams, Brittany Roulston and Nathan May, and supported by dedicated and skilled teachers and parents, the class of 2014 demonstrated our school values of integrity, excellence, respect, responsibility, co-operation, participation and fairness. Together with all our staff, I wish them the very best in their future endeavours.

I trust all parents and students are assisted by the information which is included in this report regarding school uniform. My expectations are expressed often and unequivocally – all students have the privilege of membership of this wonderful school community; however, this privilege is accompanied by the responsibility to present daily in full school uniform, behave courteously and cooperatively at all times and engage with learning and the life of the school to the best of one's ability. I really value and appreciate all students and the high standard of uniform, behaviour and commitment to learning that has been demonstrated this year. Keep up the good work!

As those who are familiar with our school community will know, the P&C and the school work together for the benefit of our students, your children. The P&C's successful grant submissions for the past two years are great examples of this partnership! The first submission assisted the improvements in the multi-purpose courts last year; the second will assist the upgrade the Numeracy Centre this year.
